WWII U.S Navy Shore Patrol Truncheon (Darley Hickory Baton)
A truncheon utilised by the U.S. Navy & U.S. Marines Shore Patrols in the U.K. during WW2. I have included an image taken in Londonderry duruing 1943 depicting a U.S. Navy & U.S. Marine S.P. near the City's Main Police Station. The Marine S.P. is carrying an example of this truncheon. Also I have included a image taken from the supplier's 1941 Catalogue showing the truncheon with a description. I have also included another image showing the American truncheon. This image taken in 1943 on board a U.S.Navy Destroyer, docked at the City Quay, shows some of the crew being inspected before going on shore leave. One member of the crew designated for Shore Patrol Duties wears the S.P. armband, web belt & carries the Darley Hickory Baton. This pattern was one of several purchased by the U.S.Navy Department when the United States of America entered WW2 after the attack on Pearl Harbour.
The City of Londonderry was one of the major Ports for Escort Vessels of the Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy, U.S.Navy & also Free French with smaller contingents of various other Allied Nations. Inevitably there was much friction between groups of sailors on shore leave & many disturbances occurred. A substantial establishment of U.S. Marines was also Barracked around the City to protect the Port & Naval Installations. This American Baton was left behind, on the floor, of a local bar after the Shore Patrol had to 'intervene' when things got nasty between opposing groups of sailors! The Bar owner placed the baton behind the Bar. expecting the U.S. Shore Patrol to return to retrieve their baton. However nobody ever did & there it remained for many years!
The 22 inch (56cm) truncheon is in good condition with just a few marks and scratches as to be expected.
