Early 19th Century Large Size Watchman's Wooden Rattle
An early 19th century large size double claker Watchman's rattle.
This type of rattle was used by Watchmen prior to the formation of the Metropolitan police (1829) it was not swung but held in one hand by the handle and revolved by means of a knob on the top. Rattle is in working order when swung although the top knob is missing.
10.5 inches (27cm) long and 9 inches (23cm) top to bottom of handle.

In original condition.

19th Century Handcuffs by Sir Peter Tait

Sir Peter Tait had premises in Limerick and London and was a supplier to the British government of military uniforms and accoutrements during the mid 19th century and also supplied uniforms to the Confederacy during the American civil war.

These are a rare set of handcuffs stamped on each bow 'SIR P. TAIT & Co LONDON' and are in good working order.

Mid 19th Century Handcuffs by Thompson
Thompson was a English firm located in Birmingham. 

The first reference in the Birmingham City directories appears in 1845 with John Thompson listed as a handcuff maker at 9 Court Coleshill Street. A few years later he moves to Bartholomew Street at an address very close to where William Froggatt's company was located. 

Thompson was also a supplier of handcuffs to the union during the American civil war 1861-1865.
This is a rare set of handcuffs made by Thompson and are in excellent condition and working order with original matching number key.

19th century Thames River Police Sword/Cutlass
The Thames river police was formed in 1798 as a private concern and then taken into government control in 1800. In 1839 it was incorporated into the metropolitan police but still retained its distinctive uniform and organisation based on the Royal Navy.
The cuttlass type sword has a cast brass-hilt with knuckle bow and side guard.

The 27 inch slightly curved blade with a single fuller along both sides and stamped at the ricasso with crowned inspection mark. Contained in its original black leather scabbard with brass mounts.

The scabbard release button is still present and working well.

Police Handcuffs by Parker Holborn c1840
A rare set of backstrap handcuffs by Parker Holborn with original key.
William Parker had premise at 233 Holborn and was a manufacturer and suppler of police equipment to the very first professional British police force in 1829 up-until his death in 1840.
One cuff is marked with the the number '150' and maker' details of 'PARKER HOLBORN' the other cuff is marked 'POLICE'.
Good working order.

Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Co. Police Handcuffs
A rare set of Late 19th century Railway Police leading (come along) handcuff by Hiatt of Birmingham. Cuffs are stamped HIATT on one side and L&Y.R.Co (for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company) on the other.
The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company commenced operating from 1847 till 1922 when they amalgamated into the London & North Western.
The cuffs would have been used by the British Transport Police for escort prisoners.
Plated finish worn in places with some rust but still in good working order.
